Tech Tip for RP users: SLC vs STL Files?

We think SLC files work best for Solidscape users. Here's Why:

STL files are created by 3D Systems' stereolithography CAD (computer-aided design) software. Widely used for RP (rapid prototyping) and outputting on CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) machines, STL is a 32-year-old file format supported by many other software packages. But STL's downsides are many.
STL files are huge and complex, making them prone to errors, and difficult to handle and email. CAD designers must also spend more time using software packages such as VisCAM or Magics to prepare STL files before printing on their RP machines.

SLC files, on the other, can be created in less time than STL files. Although SLC files cannot be viewed as STL files can, SLC file sizes are much smaller, typically 5-10% the size of comparable STL files. This makes SLC files quick and easy to email, with no need to use FTP access.
SLC files are identical quality to STL files and much less prone to errors, so there's little to need to waste time and effort cleaning up file errors as with STL files.

That's why BERMARKonline recommends SLC files for RP users as they create and prepare designs for output on their RPs.
For Solidscape users, we recommend Bermarkonline SLC files as we can provide fast service on SLC files, outputting in 2-3 working days versus 1-2 weeks for STL files due, as we noted above, to their much larger size and extra work required.

Note: Because all other RP machines require the placing of support on their designs before they are saved as SLC files, we can only supply STL files for RP machines other than Solidscape, like Envisiontec, DWS and 3D Systems.
